What does the Dutch Health and Safety Act say?
Many trainees ask us: “Can I get my aerial work platform certificate in one day?” The answer is yes. With a practical, hands-on approach you’ll learn safe operation of an AWP in one day, including both theory and practical exercises. This makes the course ideal for workers who need to be deployable quickly on site.
What does an AWP course cost?
The cost of an AWP course depends on the type of aerial work platform, whether you choose open enrollment or an in-company training, and whether an external exam is required. The starting price is € 186.00 (excl. VAT). What’s always included:
- Practical training with real aerial work platforms
- Theory on safety, regulations, and use
- Examination and certification plus ID card
By investing in a certificate you not only prevent unsafe situations, but also comply with occupational health & safety obligations.
AWP course in English: accessible for non-Dutch speakers
Because many sectors employ international workers, there’s growing demand for “AWP course English.” Offering the course in the learner’s native language speeds up learning and improves pass rates. For in-company training, custom arrangements can often be made.
Differences between type 1B, 3A and 3B platforms
Type 1B: static boom AWP
A static boom aerial work platform (type 1B) is set up stably on the ground and cannot move while the work basket is elevated. These platforms are often mounted on a base with outriggers (e.g. trailers or trucks).
- Feature: They have a boom or arm that can extend and bend, offering a wide horizontal and vertical reach.
- Ideal for: Tasks where you remain in one spot but need to reach difficult places — e.g. tree trimming, façade cleaning, or elevated installations. You do not need to move the machine during operation.
Type 3A: mobile vertical AWP
A mobile vertical aerial work platform (type 3A), also known as a scissor lift, can move while the work basket is elevated.
- Feature: The lift mechanism is typically a scissor structure raising the platform vertically. This means the basket always remains directly above the machine’s base.
- Ideal for: Jobs requiring you to go straight upward — e.g. installing ceiling lighting, warehouse work, or façade tasks in a straight line.
Type 3B: mobile boom AWP
A mobile boom aerial work platform (type 3B) combines the mobility of a 3A with the reach of 1B.
- Feature: These machines can move while elevated and have an extendable or articulated boom. They provide both mobility and reach.
- Ideal for: Situations where you must maneuver around obstacles or reach at different heights and distances — e.g. installing signage, work on construction sites, or industrial installations.
SOG and IPAF certification: The difference & added value
In addition to the standard AWP certificate, we also offer the option of external exams via SOG or IPAF certification:
- SOG AWP Certificate: This certification is often required in the petrochemical industry and other high-risk environments. It indicates you meet stringent safety criteria. To take a SOG exam, a valid VCA diploma is required.
- IPAF Certificate (International Powered Access Federation): An internationally recognized certification. After passing the course and exam you receive a PAL Card (Powered Access License), which globally proves you are qualified to operate aerial work platforms. Nowadays, the IPAF certificate is also recognized by SSVV, so in many cases you no longer need a separate SOG exam if you hold an IPAF certificate.
Is the AWP course suitable for beginners?
Yes — the course is appropriate for both beginners and for experienced operators who wish to refresh their knowledge.
Can the course only be taken in Tynaarlo?
No — besides open enrollment sessions, an in-company training can be held on your own worksite and with your own machines.
Tips & tricks for participants
- Beforehand: wear safety shoes and work gloves.
- Choose the correct categories: think about which aerial work platform you use most often.
- Plan ahead: keep track of your certificate’s expiration date.
- Ask questions during training: the more you practice, the more confident you’ll be.
Conclusion
Taking an AWP course is more than just fulfilling a requirement — it’s an investment in safety, productivity, and confidence.
